Particularities of the Program

Poster to warn German emigrants by O. Goetze ca. 1900-1910

The study program integrates historical, culturally specific and regional studies perspectives which through the conceptualization of transcontinental spaces are combined methodologically in a novel way into an innovative research approach. This approach is unique among the national study programs on transnational studies and global history.

The study program is characterized by its special focus on interdisplinarity and training in academically relevant key skills.

These goals are achieved through the following structural features of the study program:

  • Interdisciplinary team teaching within the profiling modules (modules 8-13), i.o.w., these courses are taught jointly by instructors from at least two different departments
  • Double mentorships from the third semester onwards
  • Mandatory stays abroad for fieldwork and research purposes (module 7) (cf. here)
  • Intensive training in academic core competencies such as academic writing and academic speaking. Select courses are also taught in English so as to advance internationalization and the acquisition of intercultural competencies (module 6)
  • Skills acquisition in the area of science management and organization: independently organizing a scholarly event (workshop/field trip/summer academy) is part of the curriculum (module 6)
